At the Blessing of the Bikes we try to read out the names of those cyclists we have lost in the past year, followed by a moment of silence.
The names of the missing cyclists come to us from our friends at .
They create the Ghost Bikes that can be seen around the city -- small and somber memorials for bicyclists who are killed or hit on the street. A bicycle is painted all white and locked to a street sign near the crash site, accompanied by a small plaque. They serve as reminders of the tragedy that took place on an otherwise anonymous street corner, and as quiet statements in support of cyclists' right to safe travel.
The Pedestrian Memorial project is also part of their good work.
You can see a map of where local Ghost Bike memorials can be found in New York City and around the world .
